When all else fails, NIV to the rescue. ALSO: A relatively warmer January is predicted. We shall see. -12°F here for New Years day. -24.44°C
It's all progress. When I started out walking with my wife we used to walk a loop that was a little under 3 miles and it would take us a bit over 50 minutes. Then when I went out without her I pushed the speed harder, hoping for a time when I could sustain a 15-minute mile walking pace for the full circuit. Then I increased the loop to 5 miles, but couldn't sustain the pace for that long. Over time I pushed the speed and the distance in tandem and then got into jogging to push the pace faster. It takes a while, it's just a matter of keeping at it and accepting that some days are just dismal. Yesterday's run was one where I felt I just wanted to quit completely and go back to sitting on the sofa eating junk. If you can jog a mile without stopping already you're not in a bad starting shape. It's also good to sustain a slower pace for longer - my problem is that I tend to push the speed early and pay the price later when I can't sustain it. Even knowing I do it I have to make a very conscious (and sometimes very labored) effort to keep my speed down when it doesn't feel like I'm making much effort.
Yep Walked a mile with the family this morning, then a couple of hours of hard yard work— raking! this afternoon ran a mile. The jogging stride was causing some discomfort in my upper right hip so I tried to lengthen the stride just a bit today. I hesitate to call it a “running stride” but it was more ch more comfortable . I stopped every 1/4 mile and walked 39 seconds to keep my heart from exploding! But the running itself was much better without hip pain Work in progress but I’m feeling better. Next week will be interesting to see how I work this into my work schedule
Not much chance to do any outside exercise today as it rained the entire day. So I got busy with the breaking, and did some more work on the house. I bagged up another 80lb or so of plaster and general debris and have another bag that's probably about 2/3 full. Now I have five bags of trash ready to roll with the regular household garbage. I've probably got enough plaster left on the walls in the area I'm finishing off to fill the last bag. It really slows everything down when trying to dismantle things without destroying them. The drywall and lath and plaster walls are getting trashed and broken up but the 100+ year old red oak that makes up the trim is something I want to preserve as best I can. Most of it has survived, although it's really hard to pry it away from the wall studs when a new floor was laid restricting its movement. This is where I use an oscillating tool with a carbide blade to cut through the nails so I can lift the baseboards out of position rather than prying them and hoping the wood doesn't splinter. In the process I've also moved some things around which has given me access to the ceiling space I need to run cables into the next room. Initially at least I'm just going to have a light, but it will be wired for a light and fan with switches at all exits to control them. What I really want to do is get the last of the knob and tube disconnected, but that means getting access into some spaces that I'm not sure how to get at without breaking things I'm not ready to break just yet.
Okay. -12°F to 30 to -9 to 27 with snow merely blowing from one end of town to the other. Sunny to gray to flurries. I finally cracked.
Long drive home last night, but still managed to get my mile run in when I got home. Running on a gravel road in the mountains sure is different that running on asphalt in the flatlands. And it was 35 degrees cooler, so I had on the sweat pants and sweatshirt. Back to work today. Happy 2022 3 everyone.
It's down to 25 degrees here, the coldest it has been since last winter I think. I'm hoping to get some decent exercise in but with temperatures like this I'm not sure. I can wrap up for a walk but trying to run in multiple layers turns me into a bath of sweat and that isn't good for keeping warm. As yet I don't have a lot in the way of technical clothing, so it's pretty much a case of doing the best I can with what I have. The new gym near home (well, near-ish, it's about 10 miles away) looks like it might be opening very soon, but early reports from friends are that they expect people to sign up to a three year membership contract. I'm not sure if that's serious - it's hard to imagine many people signing up for a 3-year contract with a gym when other local gyms don't expect any more than a month-to-month membership.
I hear you. Low 30s here right now, with a little upside around 4 pm. Supposed to dip back down to around 33 by the time I get home today. I don't have any decent cold weather gear either, especially for running. I was in short and a t shirt last week in south Georgia where it was 80 degrees, and I was roasting in that. The long sweat pants and hooded sweat shirt last night felt like dragging 2 comforters, a blanket, and a duvet up and down the road, yet I was a sweatbox at the end of a mile. Today might be a "walk 2 miles" sort of day. Plus, it's raining cats and dogs. If its raining when I get home, I'll watch the fireplace.
The temperature reached a tropical 26 degrees so my wife and I went for our walk around town. No speed records broken but good to be out in the fresh air. Yesterday the temperature was in the 50s so I was walking in shorts and a T-shirt. Today I had long sweatpants, a sweatshirt and a vest over the top. By the time I got home I had sweated a bit but not a whole lot. This afternoon I'm drilling holes in the ceiling joists and running more cables. Fun fun fun....
I'm in the office although it is officially "closed" today doing warfare with both strategic and tactical planning for 2022, reviewing the final "budget," and throwing away pounds of paper. Ah, the aroma of a fresh new stack of legal pads...
I got a few holes drilled and another piece of cable run. I had to move a few other things out of the way as I worked, but now I have lights in two adjacent rooms so I can see what I'm doing. They are both very temporary, both run off a single switch that is also temporary, but it works and for now that's what counts. I also got a long piece of 2x4 removed from the wall studs, which was interesting. It's the entire length of the room, so about 16 feet, nailed to the wall studs with construction grade nails. All it ever supported were strips of wood that mounted enormously heavy compressed cardboard ceiling tiles. Why whoever installed it felt the need to use full-blown 2x4s nailed with construction grade nails is a mystery, but now the last of them is removed. With that piece gone I can get at the last sections of lath and plaster on that wall, get the plaster bagged up and the laths out. A friend with a workshop in his garage burns wood to keep warm in the winter, so he's very happy to take scrap wood off my hands. Every once in a while a piece of work creates a big pile of scrap wood, which keeps him in fuel for a while. It saves me the time and trouble of taking it out back and burning it, and means the heat that burning it creates is actually used rather than just wasted. Seems like a win-win situation.
I like it Colder than a … well, cold I did some stretches but no run today… pattern so far is run… run… rest I like the third part immensely
My son and I took the dog for a walk after dinner. -18°C; with wind chill, about -30°C. Needless to say, it was a fairly short walk.
I know that "Christmas" is over, but geez, this one just lays me out every time. The blend is incredible. Lowry is incredible. And the chick (soprano, Katie Lott) is just a monster! Listen to the long chord in the bridge and very last chord for her on the top of the stack.
This is an increadible arrangement. The background singers are fabulous, especially the lead Soprano. I'm sure you know that the song was written by Lowry.
