Yeah, it's nuts. I'm a strict constructionist when it comes to statutes, and I think the court was correct, but boy, it turns 15 years of jurisprudence and practice right on its head. Now I've got to decide whether the fact that we did file against both doctor and hospital, then settled with hospital so that only doctor remains as the sole defendant, move us into a "single defendant" status, which would be awesome, or whether the fact that we originally sued two defendants keeps us in the apportionment world. Lot of wheels within wheels within wheels this week. As the little boy said as his daddy dragged him out of the auditorium for acting up, "Pray, saints, pray!"
Was in the hospital over the weekend. Nothing too serious. Was low on sodium. That caused me to be tired and very week all the time. Also my chest was constricted. They checked that out. Only found a nodule that I have known for decades was there. They were concerned about it until I told them what it was (or wasn't, as is closer to the facts.)
Yeh! Fall appears to be finally here, at least here in Florida, for now. Last night I had to sleep under a sheet for the first time in a long time. I probably could have turned off the fans but that would be more trouble than it 's worth.
A bit over a week ago I decided to use a facility I discovered in the software that goes with my fitness tracker. It's a training plan that lets you define a goal and choose a coach, and the coach gives you a training plan to work towards your goal. The coach my wife chose has a succession of workouts that are mostly little more than "easy run" and "long easy run" at this stage. Because she's never really been into running she's alternating running and walking but getting slowly better. The coach I chose has all sorts of things incorporated into workouts. Things like cadence drills, speed drills, magic miles, half mile repeats and so on. Today's workout was four cadence drills (30 seconds at 150-200 steps per minute), then four cycles of accelerating and gliding, then a mile at a challenging pace (I get to decide what counts as "challenging"), then a cool down, then four cycles of running half a mile at my goal pace with cool downs, then five minutes of gentle jogging as a final cool down. I started the whole thing out with a 3 mile walk to a suitable starting point, so I could use a particular section of local road that's very quiet, hilly enough to be more work than just endlessly running on the flats but not so hilly that running it will kill me. Running the uphill sections into the wind was interesting. Still, I felt pretty good when my watch beeped at me and said "workout ended". I'm not sure if I'll be able to complete the course without suspending it. Things like cadence drills don't work on a treadmill because it doesn't respond anywhere near fast enough. Running a mile on a treadmill is so much easier than running it on a road with hills it's hard to meaningfully compare the two. I might need to modify it, change the coach, or just suspend it and find a gym with treadmills I can use nearby. I can work on speed and endurance on a treadmill, even if things like hill repeats aren't much of an option.
Nearly crashed into a cow moose yesterday on the way home from work. She jumped down on the road with her calf and went right in front. I figure she was about a foot off my front bumper.
ouch. Another 14 inches could have just ruined your day. I do have a question. How do the deer and moose know to cross and the "Deer Crossing" or "Moose Crossing" signs?
That's a good question. I remember reading a report from a township meeting where someone asked for the "deer crossing" sign to be moved because he didn't think they should be crossing there when there was a better place for them to cross 1/4 mile further up the road.
Haha. We don't have those little signs. The highway has giant signs that say moose/elk/deer/bear crossing, next 25km.
I don't know. It sounds like too much work to me. The only time you will see me running is because someone is chasing me.
Since it's getting colder I decided to shift tack a little from the room I've been breaking, and fill a few holes. I found some more holes where ceiling joists were rested in holes in the brickwork, that let cold air rush down inside the bricks and out through the holes. Essentially what it means is that the insulation between indoors and outdoors was a sheet of drywall. Except now the drywall isn't there any more. The room I've been breaking used to be a very small bedroom adjacent to a long thin closet. The closet was of limited value because it was too deep to be useful - if you put stuff near the door you couldn't get past it to use the rest of the space. Now the wall between the closet and the bedroom is mostly gone, and I plan to enlarge the bedroom to take in the closet and the space by where the doors to bedroom and closet used to be. The bedroom will be a little bigger, and I'll gain a door and frame I can use elsewhere. I already have a plan for where it's going to go. First order of business was removing another layer of bricks from the chimney stack so I could get at one of the holes. That was tricky as it was surrounded by beams so I had to break the bricks into much smaller pieces than I had hoped. Finally I got them all out, then got the vacuum cleaner in there to clean out the holes, then the air compressor to blow out anything that remained, and then a last go with the vacuum cleaner. The next step was a can of spray foam, which filled all of the holes. One of the holes was tricky to get to as it's right in the very corner of the room and I can't yet take down the section of wall I'd need to remove to be able to get at it properly, so I sprayed a load of foam as close as I could get to it. Now I've got 100lb of concrete chunks sitting around, another 40lb bag of drywall pieces and old plaster ready to go out for the garbage men, a small pile of old laths ready for my friend who burns it, and a hope that my neighbor will need some more concrete for a project he's been working on for some months now. If he doesn't I'll need to figure another way to get rid of it, which will probably involve putting it out with our regular garbage 40lb at a time.
I hope my legs are still good for today's workout. The main feature is speed repeats, half mile runs at a pace faster than my target with recovery times between them. I hope I can get back and forth between suitable points so I don't end up trying to run hills faster than is good for me.
I did the speed repeats. Last time there were four but this time there were six. For the last one I really struggled to maintain the pace towards the end - essentially I'm running back and forth across a bowl, so all six of them ended with me running up a gentle hill. For the cool down I opted for gentle jogging rather than walking, because I'd got to a point where I had a nice gentle downhill for a while. I don't need any help resting - I can do that myself
Today's workout was a "long easy run". I forgot about the easy part and ended up setting a new personal best. Oops.
Today's fun project was trying to pass a piece of cable over the whopping distance of NINE feet. What should have been a 5-minute job ended up taking three hours, due to beams I didn't expect and having to extricate my fish tape from an unidentified trap somewhere in the cavity. Eventually I managed it and got a light connected and working. Tomorrow's job is to take it down again, now I know I'm happy with its location I can run a new piece of 14/3 to power it.
The workout I was supposed to do yesterday but kicked out until today because my knee just wasn't having it. This was demanding, as well as a few drills that encourage smooth acceleration and improving cadence I had to run half mile intervals at a faster than usual pace. Rather than risk getting stuck with a fast pace up an extended hill I run back and forth across what's essentially a basin. It means I have to run up a moderate hill for half of each repeat but also means I know what I'm getting rather than suddenly finding I've got a full half mile of incline and a challenging pace to maintain. Today I had eight speed repeats which got progressively more difficult. I was glad when they were over. Maybe this afternoon I'll muster some energy and do some more wiring work on my porch, I'm not sure yet.
ANother workout today. I would have liked a rest day but the weather for the next few days is supposed to be nasty so my options were to do it today, to do it in the rain (and maybe in the snow if I was really lucky), or to reschedule multiple workouts so I had four consecutive days of them next week. Speed repeats yesterday followed by pace repeats and a "fast mile" (which is what it sounds like) today may not have been the best option to take for the longevity of my legs. Now I'm in my recliner with my legs up and a cup of coffee. Tomorrow there is an organised 10k in town that I considered entering but after yesterday and today I think I'm going to take a day or two as rest days.
