    I've always wondered about that saying...

    Is is "towing the line" or "toeing the line"?

    I can see a case for both uses.

    I've seen both. I refer to the towing or dragging the line, used on river barges, meaning going to work.

    Toeing the line is lining up at the starting line of a race, and is used to mean basically the same thing as towing, HaHaHa!

    I believe toeing the line originally meant conform to standards.
