    For those who haven't heard, a lone gunman target a GOP congressional baseball practice this morning in ALexandria, VA.
    Congressman Scalise from Louisiana shot in hip; stable condition. Four other staffers shot.
    About 20 GOP congressmen and senators were at the practice.

    About 50 rounds fired. 2 Capitol Police (Scalise's security detail, since he's the #3 in the House) were both wounded but shot the shooter.

    More details at 11

    Bernie Sanders just announced that the shooter, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, of Illinois, had volunteered on his presidential campaign.
    It's also been reported that Hodgkinson ask others in the area if it was republicans or democrats practicing that day before he began shooting. If true that means this wasn't someone looking to shoot random innocent people he was purposely targeting republicans.

    I heard that report, too. It was one of the congressmen that was at the practice and had left early with one of his staffers. He said that as he got to his car to leave, a guy walked up and asked about the practices. Congressman says "we're practicing for the annual congressional charity ballgame tomorrow night at Nats' field. Guy then asks "so who's on the field over their, democrats or republicans.?" Congressman says, "we're all republicans."

    The guy then started walking toward the third base dugout as they drove off...

    I'm sure Bernie is running from that as fast as his Medicare paid for scooter will permit...

    And the stupid thing is liberals will say that the shooter's political views had NOTHING to do with his motive for shooting Republicans but had it been an ultra right-wing nut job shooting at Democrats...well, we ALL know (sniff) the shooter's political views would have had EVERYTHING to do with his motive (nose stuck in the air) for shooting. Ugghhh. I really don't like liberals...

    How do you know the shooter was a Liberal? And why judge a whole group of people because of one person?

    If you recall a similar situation happened with the shooting in Tucson, AZ of the Rep Gabrielle Gifford as well as some others including a judge. Initially some people said it was a Conservative targeting a Democrat, but turns out the shooter was found to be a paranoid schizophrenic.

    That's probably the case most of the time. I'd think.

    He was a volunteer for Bernie.

    Probably not a conservative

    Is it a given, that for the most part:
    Republicans = Conservative
    Democrats = Liberals?

    He was a fan of Bernie. Anybody fond of Bernie is NOT a conservative. More liberal, actually. Oh, I didn't like liberalism WAAAAAAYYYYYY before this. You never see any of my tirades about liberals in other posts in the forum? LOL! To clarify, I don't hate liberals as people. In that regard I'm no better than them. But the way they think? Mostly based on their "feelings" rather than objective reality? I can't stand that.

    Sure, he probably voted Democrat (although maybe not since I suspect a lot of Bernie supporters may have stayed at home. Maybe we should wait a bit on additional info is what I'm saying.

    How did so-called liberalism and conservatism become mutually exclusive?
    Each represents a political/social philisophy borne of hard-won experience and has played a key role in the successful shaping of the country.
    This pervasive, increasing demonization of either side
    is, imo, detrimental to our democracy.

    Not sure.
    But great point.

    So, liberals have ALWAYS been ok with abortion? Allowing gays to marry? Transgenders to use any bathroom they want? Allowing illegal immigrants to vote? Increasing taxes on the middle class to help pay for socialistic programs? And you wonder why conservatives like me don't feel united with them in their mindset and attempt to hold hands and sing Kumbaya with them?

    Issues can and should be debated without debasing and dehumanizing opponants

    Sure, issues that aren't agreed on should be debated. And my saying I don't agree with their mindset is NOT "dehumanizing" them. I fully concede liberals are human. They're no less human than I am. You're exaggerating a bit.

    The OP cited yet another, tragic shooting.

    Before long, the thread was diverted to a rant about "liberals" and how they would likely say such and such a thing (which hasn't actually happened) - subtly intimating that liberal politics is to blame for the shooting.

    Sticking to each current liberal-versus-conservative issue at least offers the hope of resolution, while the "I don't like liberals," though the current, popular trend, does nothing but fan the flames of resentment.
    It would be a significant stretch to imply that liberal politics pulled that trigger.
