The eruption is basically creating it's own weather system. There's been a number of pop-up heavy rain events and even pop-up thunder storms within the Puna area. Some of those were when the rest of the island was sunny and clear.

The Coast Guard, ever since the Pu'u O'o system was pouring lava into the ocean for the past few years, they've set a minimum distance of 200 yds off shore or from the lava entering the sea, IIRC. (I've heard 300 yds also, but not sure). From what I understand, a few captains who own "Lava Tour" companies/boats asked the CG to reduce or un-restrict that that distance. There were others (including my friend who runs a boat/tour company) said that wasn't a good idea at all and pleaded their case to keep the distance at what was already stated. CG sided with the "reduce" group. The particular boat that was caught in it was, obviously much too close when the explosion happened.

For anyone who has Facebook, look up Ikaika Marzo's page. He has a video, as they were headed back to Hilo, that shows just how large the explosion was......even as far as they were. There even was a picture floating around that someone may have shared on his page that shows the explosion that someone who was on the damaged boat caught.

Just to clarify, the distance is 300 meters from the lava entry.

It appears that the eruption is winding down. No collapse/earthquake event at Halema'uma'u crater in Kilauea caldera in 96+ hours and lava, while still present in fissure 8 (the fissure that the lava was erupting from), is no longer feeding the lava channel which led down to the ocean. There is lava being pushed below in tubes, but it's mainly an a'a flow (which moves much slower), and some parts of the once active lava channel have increased in height by 20 feet, if not more, due to the change in the lava.
