Why do clerical collar shirts have a strip of cloth covering the buttons?

I thought that the group of people here might have some idea. None of my other shirts have this. Not even the more formal shirts. But all of the clerical shirts have a strip of cloth covering the buttons. And they didn't come from the same source. Doesn't really make a difference. Just curious.

I'd be interested to. I figured it was just the aesthetic. And so those wearing them could bust out the word 'placket' on unsuspecting questioners.
