You talking about the New Fiefdom of "OrangeManBad" that has seceded from the Union?

Seattle? No idea. If it's an outbreak of Orange Man Bad as the good Rabbi suggested I'd be surprised it came from Washington rather than California. Still, you never know...

Lots of sanding for me today. I retrieved four pieces of window trim from the attic last night. This morning I went for my walk around town before it got too warm, then set to sanding. Even with a belt sander it's a slow process, the sander gets quite hot and then it tends to melt stuff onto the belt rather than scratching it away. Now I've got four pieces of yellow pine that are stripped mostly back to bare wood but need another pass with a finer belt. At least that should be quicker, with any luck I can do all four of them without letting the sander cool down.

Once that's done and I can get all the sawdust cleaned up I can get busy staining and lacquering. I had hoped to get one coat of lacquer on them today but it looks like that probably won't happen now. Never mind, I can do it tomorrow. This room is dangerously close to being ready to go.

Curious. I just did a quick Google search for Seattle and found that apparently it's a protest by people wanting justice for George Floyd. Because presumably filing charges of murder against the person who killed him, and charges of aiding and abetting murder against his fellow cops, isn't justice?

Got my boards sanded - once with a coarse belt and then with a finer belt to tidy them up, then finally with 220 grit on a random orbital sander. Once they were smooth to the touch I stained them, and now they are sitting in the room drying. Tomorrow I can lacquer them, and maybe then I can finally cut the rest of the trim I'm going to need. Still struggling a bit with motivation with the weather so warm but need to press on to get the room done.

Right now the Seattle situation doesn't seem to be like a violent threat. But, such situations pose a danger to law and order I guess.

Anarchists may use such situations as test case and scale up next installments, we may be in a civil war like situations before we know it.

The situation is no longer about justice. Leftist, Democrats have seized the opportunity with both hands. They are trying their best to escalate this as bad as they can.

The way what's left of society is going I'm sometimes surprised we haven't already had another civil war.

As you say, even if it is peaceful for now what happens if it starts to grow? How large can a self-proclaimed "autonomous zone" grow before it is considered a threat to the rule of law, not to mention those becoming caught up in it who want nothing to do with it, and stamped out?

It does raise an interesting question of what might happen if a specific geographic area does decide it wants to fend for itself and not have police protection. It reminds me of a meme I saw recently that said something like "911 operator, I see you voted to defund the police. Your call is being routed to the department of peace and unicorns, they'll get back to you within 3-5 business days. Have a nice day."

It is curious to think of groups trashing the country over a cause that has almost universal support. Even the people who point out that George Floyd was a criminal and was in the process of being arrested, as a whole, don't think that kneeling on his neck was even remotely appropriate.

I am sooooooo happy to no longer being living in the County of Police Apologies.

I heard anecdotally that in my new county, when you go to get your concealed carry permit, they give you a coupon for a free box of ammo.

The mountain river TOC is now fully operational (including streaming TV and internet!) and the arsenal has been unpacked and deployed. Drove in to work this morning... 1:12 portal to portal, including the necessary stop at Dunkin Donuts for lawyer fuel. I've gotten so much done in the last hour+ without the phones ringing or staff interruptions it has been ridiculous. I'll leave around 4 this afternoon, I have two conference calls scheduled for my drive time, then I'll be home for dinner.

Move is over. Repositioning things from various forms of storage may take a while!

Internet is not bad. We've been streaming and hitting the internet using my phone as a hotspot.

Supposed to have the stand alone hot spot either today or tomorrow.

Will need to tinker with the external cell phone antenna/amplifier a bit, but so far, it's at least functional.

Growing increasingly weary of local businesses failing to keep promises.

Two weeks ago, had I known how useless local people were, I could have done things differently. I had one guy who owns a wood-drying kiln say he was available but not right away and he'd call me back when it was, in about a week. Two weeks later and nothing. Another guy could probably sell me the wood I need off the shelf (what he has isn't quite what I want but close enough) but getting hold of him is like pulling teeth. Or I could have special ordered it in and probably be collecting it in a few days.

Until I get something sorted out I can't retrim the windows in the room I'm trying to finish.

I'm going to just go ahead and place the order I now wish I'd placed two weeks ago, subject to a sensible lead time. If I end up with multiples of what I need, so be it. It's not like this is the last room in the house.

Sad attitude! May be there isn't much competition in the area.

Curiously the guy who I had trouble getting hold of returned my call within barely 30 minutes, but did it when I was out of signal so got my voicemail and then I got his voicemail. So maybe tomorrow I'll get to go see him and get what I need.

I found I could get something that's close enough from my local Lowe's but the prices are waaaaay higher. If I can't get hold of this guy I'll make do, it just means spending $60 for a less suitable solution than $40 with this other guy would provide.

Certainly don't get value for money at Lowe's.

I remember seeing some pieces of red oak board there. Admittedly they had two good surfaces, two good edges and two good ends - the wood I usually source has two good surfaces and one good edge but the other edge and the ends may not be pretty - but the price wasn't so much as a percentage over what the sawmill charges me as multiples of what they charge me. If you don't have the tools to cut a good edge and good ends on it the chances are it's cheaper to pay the (huge) premium to not have to but around here it's hard to imagine very many people not having the tools and not knowing anyone who had the tools. It's remarkable how many people around here have some combination of jointers, planers, table saws, miter saws etc.

It will be interesting cutting a 12' long piece of 2x8 into the appropriate length for windowsills, then cutting them to fit the window cavity, putting pretty edges on them etc before the whole cycle of sanding, staining and lacquering starts over. At least this time round I'll be able to stain a whole bunch of boards at once, then lacquer a whole bunch of boards, rather than dealing with one or two at a time. Then I can fit them all and then I can get the floor lacquered. I hope I can do the floor lacquering while it's hot but while thunderstorms aren't expected - it will be good to open the windows and let the warmth dry the lacquer without worrying about whether wind will blow rain in through the window.

Marathon vehicle repair beginning tonight: replace harmonic balancer, serpentine belt, tensioner, 2 idler pulllies, coolant flush, oil service. $20 filter fixed AC & heating(!).
Rotation, new lug-bolts, clean skid plates (mud).
Be done by morning, Lord willing.
