    More hostile than when?

    The inquisition?

    The crusades?

    Now?

In the early days everyone was hostile towards them including a whole lot of the Jews. Don't you know about Saul of Tarsus? Did you know that John was the only apostle who died of natural causes?

Rome and the like did the rest of them in just as they did other Christians in often excruciating, barbaric ways.
It wasn't until Constantine and the Edict of Milan in 313 that Roman persecution of Christians ended.

Christians and non-Christians alike did their sinful 'thing', drew lines, created ideological divisions, etc. The Catholic Church, or Roman Catholic Church, didn't come onto an otherwise peaceful scene and suddenly star bloody wars for supremacy. The 'C'hurch was already doing that.
