Has anyone had any news about how our Hawaiian friends are fairing?

Liquid Tension No, it's NOT a fish!!!

Personally, Mom and I are fine (Dad also in the care home). Tons of rain. One location in Hilo recorded 51+" of rain, and another location (Hilo Airport I think) recorded just shy of 50". I was worried about the water from the driveway flooding our garage. I did spill into the garage a little, but for the most part, water would get close, then the rain would slow down enough to drain back down. A number of houses were damaged, along with roads. The amount of water flowing down rivers, canals, the waterfalls, etc. was amazing.

Not sure about the other islands, as the hurricane went from a Cat 3 to a Tropical Storm in a 24 hr. period. But Hawaii Island caught the brunt of the storm. Living here all my life, there have been 3 rain/storm events the state has had over the last 2 years have (to me) been unprecedented.

Last year, Hurricane Darby took a similar path to this hurricane and had weakened to a Tropical Storm, but it stalled SSW of Oahu and dumped a whole bunch of rain there, enough to flood the H-1 Freeway in downtown Honolulu under approx. 2+ feet of water. There were many other road closures due to flooding. Having lived there for 40+ years, I've seen it rain really hard, but never enough to create a flood of that nature on the H-1.

Kauai Island had a rain event earlier in the year which destroyed a bunch of houses and, in some areas, literally changed the shorelines.

It's been pretty epic here, and not necessarily in a good way. But from a personal standpoint, we're good. :)
