    Thanks for posting these LT.

Liquid Tension No, it's NOT a fish!!!

Last night (Saturday 5/19), lava reached the ocean with two flow points. In an interesting development, a giant crack opened up under one of the lava channels, swallowing the lava on that particular flow and is disappearing underground........somewhere. Same thing happened during a previous eruption event, and the lava never reappeared. I'll find what year that was.

I find any volcanic activity fascinating.
I remember seeing a short film many years ago.
A man in suit and tie running across the street with a briefcase over his head, keeping the volcanic ash from getting on him.
Sudden realization that young earth/old earth is simply banter best served as conversation at social gatherings.
The vast power of an eruption makes me feel rather insignificant.

This has got to be some sort of record as far as how long it's lasted.

That volcano has been continuously active for like 50 years.

Not much difference to report today. One interesting of note is that scientists believe that lava sampled and chemically tested from fissure 17 is older than the 1955 lava flow. They believe this may be an indication of how much longer this could go on.

Kilauea's been continuously erupting since Jan. 3 1983.

Always pouring out lava like the last few weeks?

Well, no, not always like that. But there has always been lava oozing down toward the sea.

Look, I feel bad for anybody that has lost a home or other property to this volcano erupting lava, BUT...people really shouldn’t build homes so close to an active volcano. I mean, that’s NOT exactly a smart thing to do, is it? It’s kinda like when people decide to live in Tornado Alley, then scratch their heads in shock and confusion when an F-5 twister demolishes their house.

Lived in Tornado Alley for 17 years. Saw plenty of twisters. Was never confused about the risk.

    That's why we had insurance.

Yeah, grew up in the Vancouver area. Still waiting on the inevitable major earthquake.

Man. I thought I was negative. The dagger always arrives after the BUT....

Sure, but, let’s be real. Is it a SMART idea to build houses near an ACTIVE VOLCANO? As the flowing lava that has burned down people’s houses demonstrates, I’d say “no.” What say YOU?

Then why live in Florida as I do. We have hurricanes. Why live in California. They have earthquakes. Why live in the Mid-West. They have tornadoes.

Yeah, I suspect the risk factors in the insurance calculations are probably lower for Hawaii than parts of Florida.

Possibly. But I think it's easier to prepare for a hurricane, than a volcanic eruption.
