Wow. That is scary. Is it getting any nearer to where you live?

No, we're quite far from the eruptions. We're at a higher elevation also, so not worried at all about the eruptions. It's the bigger earthquakes that worry me. It's been relatively "quiet" regarding, but small tremors (mostly in the ~2.5 range) are still going on, but at the moment, they've lessened a tad bit, and we don't feel those anyway.

Here's a pic posted on Facebook by user Ann Kalber (listed for 'public use'). I believe this is the most recent, and largest outbreak.

Here's a aerial video of the eruptions. As you can see, it's the middle fissure eruption that is the largest and most active one.

Wow. That looks like something you'd see in a Lord of the Rings movie. Dragon Fire.

As bad as that is for those homeowners down there, that is just magnificent to see.

It looks more like one long feature that just has not quite connected up yet.

Yeah. I didn't realize just how lined up all the fissures were until the video. Some of the maps I've seen showed a couple of the fissures in a little more NNE of the line. The aerial definitely surprised me.

So this map is outdated by 2 days, and it doesn't show fissures 9 & 10, which are a bit further west (left) on the map. But anyhoo, Civil Defense officials started allowing residents above a certain, designated "safe point" to go back to their homes to retrieve importants documents, items, etc. They were only allowing so many to enter at a time and had strict identification/proof of residence protocols in place to enter. It was abruptly halted at around 5 pm yesterday due to reports of a small crack across Hwy 130, which is a bit to the west from the current eruptive fissures, and is a main hwy to the south. About an hour ago, apparently more cracks have developed on Hwy 130, some as wide as 5 inches wide, and officials are thus, obviously, expecting a new erupting point there.

So the activity appears to me moving further up the East Rift Zone. I'm just hoping we're not gonna get hit with another large quake, but I'm definitely uneasy about it.

ETA: Sorry, the original pic I tried to post was too large. Here an edited one.

Wow. The video footage I've been seeing from time to time is truly remarkable. Awe inspiring in the surest sense of the word.

    On a lighter not...

I wonder if anyone has run to court yet to get an injunction yet to stop it from emitting gazillions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmostphere.

Yep. The dichotomy of simultaneous destruction and creation.

Probably not, being as far as I know, cows haven't been working in conjunction with the lava. lol

From what I'm hearing, the fountaining in a number of the fissures, if not all, has slowed down considerably. The worry now is the lava backing up the East Rift Zone, as potentially evidenced by the new, large cracks to the west of the current fissures, and pressurizing in preparation for an eruption. Of course, that means the potential for more earthquakes. This thing ain't over yet, that's for sure.

Is the "East Rift Zone' an existing area, or was it named due to this event?

Existing. Seems to be the underground route the lava travels. Halemaumau crater down to Pu'u O'o crater and beyond........one of the tubes empties out into the sea. Just not this one apparently.

I don't recall a time that there were so many eruptions in one place.

    It's definitely been a while.

The latest I've seen is 2 more fissures have opened up with lava spewing out. The "good" news on this however is, if you look at the previous map I posted, it that while it's still heading toward Hwy 130, these fissures are at the outside edge of Leilani Estates in forested areas. So it is seemingly heading back up the rift in a westerly, almost WNW direction. Not out of the clear yet, but at least for now, Leilani Estates seems to be spared more extensive damage. But like anything else regarding mother nature, you just never know.

At the moment, all eruptions in the Leilani Estates have appeared to stop, which, obviously is a good thing for that immediate area. However, further west from the Estates, including Hwy 130, large cracks have developed, and sounds like an eruption(s) in that area is expected. So basically, the activity appears to be happening further up (albeit slightly) the East Rift Zone.

Two new eruptions have started back in Leilani Estates, one new fissure in east part of the subdivision near a couple of earlier fissures. The other further west near some already open fissures near the middle of the eruption fissure. This one could be part of an already formed fissure, whereas the other is definitely a new opening.

Looks like the lava lake in Halemaumau crater has dropped beyond the underground water table as about an hour ago, the first steam eruption of this phase has occurred.
