Kilauea Volcano may be getting ready for another event

At the moment, 6 fissures are erupting. Plus the uneasy feeling that the 6.9 may not be the biggest one we'll have in this event. Just too much lava and movement.

What's the biggest quake recorded for Hawaii? I could look it up too, I suppose.

7.2 I believe. 1975. Generated an local tsunami.

The interesting, and quite frankly, scary thing about what's going on is the lava pool in Halemaumau crater drained about 75-120 feet yesterday (or the other day). The Pu'u O'o crater had lava nearly cresting yesterday, but today, a helicopter flyover revealed that the lava had drained out by approximately +/-700 feet. But the fissures that are erupting isn't creating a large flow. It's like it's just bubbling and splattering, but not much more.

A ton of lava is moving, but not a lot is being emitted from the eruptions. That has me worried. That's why (and I hope I'm way wrong) I'm worried that the 6.9 isn't going to be the biggest one during this whole event.

Unbeleivable. From experience, a 6.9 is scary enough, without erupting magma or volcanoes.
    Hoping your Dad is well.

Another fissure has opened up and is erupting. Brings the total up to 7 now.

Is there any comparable episodes to this in recent history?

They're comparing it to a degree with the 1955 Kilauea eruption. Going on memory from a light reading, but started with cracks in the ground like the current one and multiple tremors. I think the difference is that there were some larger tremors the occurred prior to the beginning of the eruption. Whereas this one, there was the 5.0 quake that happened almost simultaneously to the first fissure erupting. then the larger ones occurring after a few more fissures had already opened up.

The seventh fissure eruption that opened up this morning is the largest, not only in size, but in volume apparently. There's a few whispers I'm hearing from people I trust who have family that works in the USGS/HVO of the possibility of a larger quake happening. (Larger than the 6.9 from yesterday) Kilauea caldera in Halemaumau crater is still draining........slowly. Yeah, it had that relatively large drop a couple days back, but it's slowed significantly. Obviously, if it's slowly draining, lava is still feeding the caldera, which means this eruption may last a while. From what I gather, they'd rather see a quick drop with one larger, more significant eruption where the current ones are happening now, and hopefully let it "end" quicker. I should get better info, but my friend is also the main one (aside the news reporters) providing live information. In fact, the news channels are contacting him for interviews and video. I don't really want to bother him and inconvenience him by asking him questions at the moment. Of course, there's no way to predict an earthquake, but some of what I'm hearing does make sense to my rather uneducated, non-geologist mind.

Anyway, here's some pics from the 1955 episode.

At least these are generally tranquil (relatively speaking) eruptions. I suspect a comparable Cascade type volcanic eruption would be pretty destructive.

Is there any concern over a collapse of the upper caldera? Especially as there is draining and a lot of apparent movement of the magma elsewhere.

This seventh fissure eruption is by far the largest in size (~200+ yards long I believe) and most vigorous eruption compared to the other 6. The lava, from what's being reported by people on FB Live, is actually moving, compared to just building up on the sides.

Regarding the upper caldera, I doubt they're worried about it. At least it's never been mentioned even prior to this event. It's been the same for as long as I remember. The only concerns are/have been with the Pu'u O'o crater, which has happened a couple of times in this phase.

Just read that there's an eighth fissure eruption that's started.

This is such interesting information...but also unsettling for me of course-- a rather anxious type I am.
I moved away from California because I couldn't handle the quakes, but my best friend was never bothered by them as a native.

Woke up to go to work to see that 2 more fissures have opened up, bringing the total to 10.

Anyone who's on Facebook, go to Ikaika Marzo's page. He's been doing the FB Live vids down in Puna and is probably the most up to date, with the exception of some residents who are still in the area despite evac notices and what not. He works for the county so he has legit access to be in the area.
