One of the interesting things about doing a Bible Reading Plan, for me, is that it gets me reading daily. So from time to time I see something I hadn't really noticed before. This one caught my attention the other day.

    Mark 3:21

And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” - ESV

I guess I understand why His brothers weren't among the early disciples. Or at least the Apostles. I guess after His resurrection, they finally understood and believed.

I can understand the brothers and sisters, but His mom? After all the circumstances that happened to her, you'd think there'd be no doubt. But I guess she is only human after all.

    But... but....

    Never mind.

Yes, they wanted to put Jesus in the looney bin...

This is what happens when God doesn't meet the preconceived religious standards of we humans

Keep in mind that when you talk about Jesus family that his brother became a leader of the Jerusalem church.

Well, did the reference in the scripture to "family" thinking Jesus was nuts include Mary? It shouldn't have if it did. Mary knew she was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus. His conception was obviously supernatural. Angels visited her and told her she would carry the Messiah. Mary had no legitimate reason to doubt Christ was the Messiah and the Son of God that He claimed to be. Well, unless she lied to Joseph about being a virgin and actually got pregnant by some other man and the story about angels visiting her was made up. If those things happened, then, sure, Jesus WAS just an ordinary man who suffered a Messiah complex.

    Yes, this included his mom.
    Mark 3:21
21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

Mark 3:31-32 (concludes the chapter when his family arrives. And Mary is among the family)
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

That really makes no sense. Like I mentioned, Mary had no sexual relations with a man, something sort of required to get pregnant, and yet she was carrying a baby. Sounds like Jesus was of divine origin to me. Add to that angels explicitly told Mary she was carrying the Messiah. How, then, can Mary think Jesus was "crazy?" She somehow forget about his origin and the message from the angels?

She may well have expected that Jesus was to be a political leader that kicked out the Romans and re-establiched Israel's kingdom. And his ministry was anything but that of what was expected.

I'm sure that's what MOST people thought.

Well, then, in what sense did Jesus' family, particularly Mary, think Jesus was nuts? It couldn't be that Mary thought Jesus was suffering a "Messiah complex." She KNEW He was the Messiah. Angels told her so. She also knew He was of supernatural origin, particularly since He had no human biological father.

Sure. But all the expectation of the time (and even to this day) was of a political leader forming an earthly kingdom - that was how the OT prophecies were viewed. Just because of a supernatural event around his birth does not necessariliy suggest that his ministry and actual kingdom would not have been what everyone thought. His disciples to whom he even clearly laid out what was going to happen did not get it until after his resurrection. So, yes, Mary was obedient to the call of God through the angel, but I don't think it means that she really knew what Jesus was all about.
